Kona (previously known as Kriss Kross through the McKinleyville shelter and Redwood Pals Rescue) is an approx. 2 year old, 50 pound, gorgeous neutered male Chocolate Lab/Pointer mix. Kona was brought into the McKinleyville shelter as lost on 10-4-12. He was stressed in the crowded shelter and chewed on his tail, which they amputated. It is completely healed and does not bother him. He was put into one of our foster homes on 2-18-13.
Kona is very devoted to his humans, smart, playful, athletic, friendly, and mostly well-mannered, with a medium energy level. Kona loves to fetch and enjoys the water. He is very attentive, listens well, and a quick learner. Though having no previous training when he came to us, Kona responds very quickly to positive reinforcement training. His knowledge now includes sit, down, here/come, stay, leave it, let's go, touch/target, front, swing, get around, back, heel w/auto sit, moving down, go to mat, shake, high-5, spin, etc. Kona has great potential to train for obedience, rally, and agility.
Kona is house and crate trained, and non-destructive. He is good inside and outside, but very much prefers to be with his humans whenever possible. Kona seeks a home where he will be allowed inside when his humans are (most of the time), and to sleep inside. He has made no efforts to get out of a home or fenced yard when left alone (for periods of a few hours so far), nor shows any obvious signs of separation anxiety. However, considering his devotion to be with his human, I think he would be unhappy left alone more than 4-5 hours at a time on regular basis. He rides and waits great in vehicles.
Kona has been friendly with all humans and dogs. He requires more socialization with cats, horses, and perhaps other livestock, but shows the potential to adapt to these with proper training. His response appears more as uncertainty, anxiety, excitement from lack of prior exposure rather than aggression. Kona is excellent off leash (only allowed away from roads/traffic such as Hiller Park, beaches, forests, etc.), constantly checking in and quickly responsive to recalls, he mostly stays within a 20 ft. distance by choice. He is also great on leash in those areas. He is learning proper leash behavior in urban areas - he does not pull constantly, but will pull when he is excited, which recently is improving rapidly with the use of a Easy-Leader halter. His triggers are primarily dogs barking at him from behind fences, and bikes moving fast close to him.
Kona is neutered, up to date on vaccinations, microchipped, heart worm negative, and has received other preventative health care. His foster mom is also willing to provide several free training sessions to help you learn what he already knows to ease the transition.
